Natural Latex v / s synthetic latex for use in the home and bedding
Natural latex can be found in almost all plants and trees worldwide. Mattresses and mattress toppers made of pure latex can be manufactured in two ways: Natural Rubber latex, which is 100% pure "green" latex, and as a mixture containing styrene-butadiene, a synthetic latex. There are not many manufacturers of natural latex around the world, but those who manufacture latex use a process called Talalay process.
Now the big decision for most people at this point is whether to go with 100% natural latex or use synthetic latex mixture. I'll start with the advantages and disadvantages of natural latex. First, natural latex is, well, it sounds: 100% natural with only a few other natural healers and catalysts which are washed, or heated issued out of the final product. This leaves a chemical free, free allergens and almost odorless piece of foam that is resistant to repeated use and is naturally flame resistant. However, as with most things in nature, there is some inconsistency with natural latex.
The Talalay process works well to evenly distribute the cell structure through the foam, but can only do so much. There are still some inconsistencies with natural latex foam including different batches resulting in different support properties, color changes from batch to batch foam and the simple fact that almost ALL foam held sometime after years of use.
To make the next section a little easier to deal with, I will call the mixture of natural latex and synthetic latex, Syntex. Syntex is another form of foam used in mattresses and upholstered and passed simply as "foam latex. "Syntex has the same properties of natural rubber when it comes to support, firmness and quality, but it does excel in two areas: the consistency and life. The chemicals added during the manufacturing process to allow better dispersion and thusly, more consistent throughout each piece of foam. This gives sensation and control over the density of the foam. These chemicals also produce a strong cell structure within the foam provides greater durability and life longer without sacrificing comfort. On the negative side these chemicals will not irritate sensitive to allergies and may leave a particular odor. Fortunately, the smell fades over time.
To clarify, you may see some ads claim the use of "Talalay Latex. Indeed, there is no such thing. Talalay is a process and nothing more. Consumers should be weary if you purchase 100% natural latex and see the name Talalay used with a particular product. It may just be a company trying to market synthetic latex as "natural" by using as a reference Talalay 100% natural. This is an industry ploy to trick consumers … imagine that.
